Sam Heda BIO (for YAF – Oct 2009 Featured Artists of the Month)
Although young in years 13 year old Sam has a sound that reaches far beyond his age. Dave Navarro and Johnny A. think so. Dave Navarro has been quoted saying, Sam is "among the next level of inspirational guitarists." Johnny A. has said that he hears a similarity to Carlos Santana and Joe Satriani.
Originally a drummer, Sam's Satriani/ Santana-esq. guitar playing first grabs attention and with his unique spin, you know you are listening to one of his songs! It is also his song writing ability that industry professionals say sets him apart.
All types of music and guitar playing influence Sam's writing; from Classic and Contemporary Rock, Jazz and even one of his favorite British bands, ENTER SHIKARI. You can hear some of these hard grinding licks on his guitar as well as the ever increasing popular double bass in his music.
The constant flow of original material keeps him busy and he recently recorded a cover of a classic Christmas tune, "Carol of the Bells," that is reflective of his unique style. Sam is also experimenting with Ska, the more up-beat sound of Reggae that is regaining popularity. This Ska sound is echoed in his song "Summer Solstice." Sam youth keeps him progressive and his talent and maturity allows him to bring his vision and his writing into the studio.
Wanting to give back, Sam played a benefit concert, summer of 08, fighting lung cancer @ the "Double Door Inn" in Charlotte, N.C. Sam had the honor not only of raising money for a good cause but oddly enough, at 12, stood on the same stage at the same age as Derek Trucks' first appearance there.
Sam attended the North Carolina School of the Arts summer 08. for guitar. NCSC features classical and although Sam had never played classical guitar, he wanted to expand his genre. Sam was featured, playing Classical guitar, with an ensemble in the final concert.
Just this past year, Dec. 08, the legendary blues guitarist Bob Margolin (Muddy Waters) asked Sam to open for him at the "Double Door Inn."
Sam just returned from Guitar Sessions at Berklee College of Music, Boston, Mass. August 09. He received a scholarship from Fender guitars and although the youngest, gained the respect of his peers and Berklee staff.
Sam continues to play live shows and write new music.
